For video editing try Cinelerra.
What are you trying to do with Java? If just want to
compile, use Jikes from IBM. You can get Java from
Sun or from the Blackdown project. If you want to run
a jsp server, like Tomcat, check the Java
requirements. If you want to run a J2EE server, like
JBoss, again, check the Java requirements. There are
many down sides to Java, but one of the advantages is
how easy it is to set up several java environments and
use them simultaneously with different applications.
It is also easy to switch the java version used by an
application.
MySQL is good and easy to get started with, and it is
maturing. However, I am a long time fan of Postgres.
If you just want a small and fast database behind some
web/java apps, HSQL is good.
