Oddly enough I did an online update to one of my 9.3 boxes yesterday
and I've got the same behavior. I'm fairly sure it's because the xdm
for kde isn't starting so it's falling back to the default. I'll see
if I can get it figured out today and let you know. Just to confirm,
when I login I get one of the super basic window managers and clicking
on the desktop brings up a menu.
Just before I went home I changed it's default runlevel to 3 and I'll
see what happens when I manually start X.
