Out of curiosity, what does ethtool report for your NIC when it's
working and when it's not?  Is this what your switch is configured
for?  Ideally, both should be set to autonegotiate everything.
If one end is set to autonegotiate and one is hardcoded to something,
you could get all sorts of problems.
